How will you know which area or neighborhood is right for you?Or, if it is the right area for you?
Consider the following:
- Proximity– That is, how close is it to “your” places? Work? School? Favorite shopping or restaurants? On that note, would you like to live close to a park or entertainment venues? Would you prefer to avoid crowded areas or areas with an overactive nightlife?
- Flexibility– Chances are that your life won’t always be just like it is right now. If you’re single you might one day have a +1 to consider. If you’re a couple you might one day have children. It’s a good idea to choose a neighborhood that can grow with you. Buying a condo located directly above a bar in a busy entertainment area might be a great fit for your single life, but it’s not likely to jive well when children come into the picture.
- Safety- Naturally you want to pick a neighborhood that you can feel safe living in. How can you know it’s safe? Local law enforcement agencies often release crime statistics on different areas and neighborhoods. You can also access your state’s Sex Offender Registry to see offenders living around your desired address.
- Service Availability- It’s important to consider what services are available in certain areas or neighborhoods. For instance, how close are emergency services? In rural areas you might think about internet, phone and cable service availability. Another service that few people consider when choosing a neighborhood: food delivery. It might seem like a small thing now, but living in a neighborhood where you can’t get a pizza delivered can become a source of annoyance after a while.
