Clean, clean, clean and then de-clutter
“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.” (Coco Chanel)
This is very good advice with fashion, but it is also very good advice when de-cluttering your home. Remove all your personal items throughout the house. Clear off the counters, shelves and floors. Clean and organize your closets. You may want to rent a storage shed for the short term while your house is on the market. You’re going to move these things anyway, get the jump on packing by boxing up these things.
You may be wondering why all these things should be removed when they are part of your décor; why would you want strangers to look at all your personal photos and memorabilia instead of your house? With your items removed, prospective buyers will then envision their items in the house instead of seeing yours.
Open up the windows
Well, it may be a good idea to open up your windows to let fresh air in, but I mean open up your windows with new window treatments. You may be amazed how open a room looks and feels with new window treatments.
You will also want to make sure the windows open easily and nothing is obstructing the views or blocking the light.
Replace any leaking faucets or drippy pipes
All your plumbing needs to be in working order even before potential buyers walk through. If they aren’t fixed by that time, you’ll be taking care of it before closing. It is just a good idea to do it before you list.
Prepare for Open Houses and Showings
Fresh flowers always add a nice and welcoming touch to a home. Have soft music playing in the background. Bake bread or cookies right before you leave so your home smells like home. Oh, you will be leaving – it really is not good for the home owners to be around during showings or open houses. Buyers really feel inhibited and being in the home may even cost you an offer.
It is an exciting time when you list your home. And it can feel extremely strange to have people walk through your home – but it won’t be long and you’ll be on your way to your new place.
